French court fines Carrefour for its "commercial practices"

The French Finance Ministry announced, on Friday, that the Paris Court of Commerce has fined the French company Carrefour 1.75 million euros (2.1 million dollars) for its "commercial practices."

The ministry said that the Trade Court ruled the fine due to "unjust pressure exerted by Carrefour on its suppliers to reduce prices."

The ruling came after an investigation by the anti-trust authorities into Carrefour's practices during its negotiations with suppliers in 2016.

The investigation found that Carrefour forced suppliers to offer discounts as a "precondition for entering into annual price negotiations."

The court ordered Carrefour to stop what it called "practices that restrict competition," and demanded the temporary implementation of the fine.

Reuters said the decision means Carrefour must pay the fine even if it decides to appeal.

There was no immediate comment from Carrefour.
