President of Belarus: We do not mind selling Egyptian apples, or even potatoes!

Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko confirmed that his country's authorities do not intend to prevent the import of foodstuffs, calling at the same time to ensure the existence of local alternatives in the internal market.

Lukashenko said during a business trip to one of the regions of the country on Friday: "Citizens must have the possibility to choose. We do not prohibit selling an Egyptian apple or any other apple. Please sell."

Lukashenko stressed, however, the need for alternative Belarusian products to be available. Addressing local officials, he said, "But there should be a good local apple next to it. Please direct that (Belarusian products) are always available in shops."

He continued, "It is funny to import potatoes from Egypt and Turkey. Well, let them import them. But we have the best potatoes in the world," noting also the importance of increasing exports of Belarusian agricultural products.
