Scientists from the Australian University of Queensland and their colleagues from Germany have discovered how eating apples affects the development of memory in humans.
And the magazine Stem Cell Reports notes that university scientists, in cooperation with scientists of the German Center for Neurodegenerative Diseases, conducted a study on mice, which included growing stem cells from the brain of adult mice, and then added to them the phytonutrients found in apples: quercetin or 2- Hydroxybenzoic.
The results show that the higher concentration of phytonutrients in apples stimulates the formation of new nerve cells.
Scientists say, "Phytonutrients such as resveratrol and epigallocatechin-3-gallate can have a positive beneficial effect on various parts of the body, including the brain."
The researchers point out that the effect was similar to the effect of exercise, which is known to stimulate the birth of new nerve cells.
