Uncovering the secrets and benefits of the Mediterranean diet

American scientists said that the diet of the inhabitants of the Mediterranean basin reduces the risk of cardiovascular disease and prolongs life.

According to a study conducted by scientists and the results of which were published in the "Daily Express" newspaper, it was found that adherence to the Mediterranean diet for 12 months led to "positive changes in the gut microbiome and the prevention of loss of bacterial diversity."

Additionally, the researchers documented an "increase in bacteria associated with decreased osteoporosis, improved brain function, and an anti-inflammatory effect."

The study pointed out that among the basics of the Mediterranean diet, scientists identified replacing butter with olive oil, reducing meat consumption and increasing fish consumption, as well as an abundance of fruits and vegetables.
