Study: Heartburn is a mortal danger

The results of a large, promising American study showed that gastroesophageal reflux disease, one of the manifestations of which - heartburn, is associated with a higher risk of developing cancer of the larynx and esophagus.

The study, published in the Journal of the American Cancer Society, CANCER, stated that gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is a disease that targets the stomach and intestines, and affects 20 to 40 percent of the adult population in developed countries. The disease occurs when an acidic stomach fluid is expelled into the esophagus.

A group of American scientists led by Dr. Christian Abnett of the National Cancer Institute stated that this phenomenon, called acid reflux, or heartburn, causes damage to the tissues of the esophagus and larynx, and prolonged exposure to it can lead to cancer.
