The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) again warns of the dangers of methanol-based antiseptics

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) warns consumers against using antiseptics that contain methanol because they are toxic if they are absorbed through the skin or are life-threatening if taken.

Exposure to methanol can cause nausea, vomiting, headache, blurred vision, permanent blindness, seizures, coma, permanent nervous system damage or death.

"Good hand hygiene, which includes the use of an alcohol-based hand sanitizer in the event that soap and water are not readily available, is an important public health tool for all Americans to employ," said Stephen Han, FDA commissioner, in a statement. But he added that "consumers should also be vigilant about the hand sanitizers they use and for their health and safety.

We urge consumers to immediately stop using all hand sanitizers in the FDA list of dangerous hand sanitizer products. "
