Dr Soumya Swaminathan, chief scientist at the World Health Organization, said during a press briefing in Geneva on Friday that the delta variant is on its way to becoming the globally dominant alternative to the coronavirus.
"The delta variant is on its way to becoming the dominant alternative globally due to its significantly increased portability," added Swaminathan.
According to the WHO's weekly epidemiological report released on Tuesday, 80 countries have reported the delta variant, which was first detected in India.
Dr. Rochelle Walinsky, director of the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, said Friday that she expects the delta type to become the dominant strain in the United States.
