Egypt extends the ban on importing white and raw sugar for 3 months

The Egyptian Ministry of Trade and Industry said on Tuesday that it decided to extend the ban on importing white and raw sugar for another 3 months, starting from the date of publication in the Official Gazette.

Nevin Jameh, Minister of Trade and Industry, said in a press statement that the decision was taken in coordination with the Minister of Supply and Internal Trade, and aims to "lift the damage to the national industry as a result of global price fluctuations and to dispose of the accumulated stock of sugar."

The minister pointed out that "quantities that are imported as a requirement for production for the pharmaceutical industries have been excluded, subject to the approval of the competent authority at the Ministry of Health and Population."

Egypt's accumulated storage of sugar reached about 1.4 million tons, which is sufficient for the country's consumption for a period exceeding 6 months, according to the statement.
