Sudan loses its leadership in the global market for peanuts with the ban on its export

The suspension of peanut sales abroad was a severe blow to the Sudanese, and Sudan is ranked fifth among global producers according to the United Nations' World Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), and its share is 14% of global production.

According to the decision issued by the Minister of Industry and Trade, Madani Abbas, on April 1 to ban the export of raw peanuts, Sudan has lost important markets and contracts, and India has replaced them.

In the 2017-2018 season, Sudan produced 1.66 million tons of groundnuts, according to figures from the Central Bank of Sudan.

In 2019, peanut export revenues amounted to 205.7 million dollars, a significant increase over 2018 (59 million dollars) and 2017 (88.4 million dollars).

The trade balance recorded a deficit of 4.7 billion dollars in 2018, according to the central bank.

Official statistics indicate that 67% of the Sudanese population works in agriculture.
